Maria Carrillo has won 8 of last 11 NBL titles, including the last two, but with graduation hitting the Puma’s hard watch out for other teams to challenge for top spot in the Empire.
With huge numbers you would be a fool to count Carrillo out this year however.
Casa Grande could have one of the best one-two combo’s in the North Coast Section.
Gaucho junior Matt Salazar was the only non-senior to make First team All-Empire last year and although battling injuries still turned in some nice track times last spring, 9:32.9/4:28.77.
Senior teammate Nicholas Rauch is a returning second team All-Empire runner but ran a same day double at MOC last spring, 4:16.85/1:54.35, that shows he could be the one to watch as well. Casa’s last team pennant was back in 2003 in the SCL.
Santa Rosa sophomore Luca Mazzanti is a returning second team All-Empire runner and the Panthers have enough depth behind him to make a run at the title this year.
Carrillo’s returning second team All-Empire runner is senior Zac West and you can expect them to have great grouping right behind him.
The SCL’s lone returning second team All-Empire runner is El Molino sophomore Brian Schulz who turned in a 9:27.44 3200 last spring.
Piner also graduated some of their top talent last year but will still be ready to take on challenger Analy in that league. Analy returns their top 17 runners from 2013.
The CMC will be up for grabs. The 2-9 finishers at last years finals were all undergrads lead by Roseland University Prep’s Juan Estrella who is now a sophomore.
