The Santa Rosa track and field community lost a big contributor and fan. Tom Nyhan coached throwers at Maria Carrillo for 11 years. Tom also helped out at Santa Rosa High, and most recently at Sonoma Academy. During the 2013 track season, despite going through chemotherapy, Tom coached Sonoma Academy’s lone thrower to a substantial improvement and a trip to the Meet of Champions.

Tom was a retired San Francisco Fire Captain. While in retirement, he coached throwers at Burlingame High School for 10 years. He move to Santa Rosa in 2000, and started coaching throwers at Maria Carrillo. Tom was a very friendly and funny guy, and had great rapport with his athletes. He kept in contact with many of his athletes after they graduated. The kids adored him, and many will be there Sunday to say their final goodbyes. It just won’t be the same at Big Cat, Viking Invite, and NBL’s without Tom in the throwers area. Here is the link to his obituary:
