Maria Carrillo boys are tearing up a lot of relay records this year.
Their 4 X 100 meter relay team (Dontae Garcia, Darian Galindo, Alex Netherda, Herbie Polk) has already claimed the title of fastest team all-time at 42.41 and has six of the 13 sub 43’s ever run.
Their 4 X 400 meter relay (Polk 47.9, Garcia 50.2, Netherda 50.4, Dante Hay 48.9) teams time of 3:17.59 has only been bettered once (3:17.6 Mile Relay = 3:16.70) by the 1970 Santa Rosa squad of (Carl Sagon, Wayne Praeder, Ken Borbe, Joe DeDora). Made at the state finals that year.
The old 4 X 100 meter relay record was held by the 1967 Montgomery team of Wes Dickison, Ken Graham, Joe Stender and Mel Gray and the 1971 Cardinal Newman team of Perry Grogans, Dan Randolph, Jim Wilkey and Bill Price. Both teams ran 42.6 for 440 yards converted to 42.59 for 400 meters.
What you may not realize is that before 1968 the only relay event in the league finals through state meet was the 4 X 220 yard relay.
Which means that the 1967 Montgomery team only ran the 4 X 110 yard relay in March and April in invitationals.
The real relay action back in those years was for the 4 x 220 yd Relay.
When you look at the marks they put up there you’ll see ones that no one has been able to break into since those days.
