At a lot of high schools the battle for having a great team sometimes comes down to cross country vs soccer.
So many high school kids have the talent to be excellent at both but have to choose between the two since in the Redwood Empire, unlike other areas of California, soccer is played in the fall. A recent example was Cara Curtin from Maria Carrillo.
Cara Curtin this year has been the top soccer scorer for Sonoma State after being an NBL league cross country runnerup to her sister Lauren.
That’s one reason it is so impressive that this fall Maria Carrillo has both the top ranked division II cross country teams in the NCS for both boys and girls and has both their boys and girls soccer teams playing for the NCS Division 1 section championship
