Major Cross Country League Changes
This fall Piner and Elsie Allen are moving to the Sonoma County League while Windsor and Casa Grande are moving to North Bay League.
This will be a home coming of sorts for Piner as they return to the league they started at, while it will be new territory for Casa Grande, Windsor and Elsie Allen.
From the little I have heard the reason for these switches have to do with what general public considers the big sports like football were Elsie Allen and Piner were often playing very strong NBL teams and scores were often 50-0. Not that any of that has anything to do with girls cross country.

These changes in the sport of girls cross country make the NBL even more of a power house league than it was before and nearly wipes out the SCL league. But hey football will be better.

Last year only four of the seven SCL girls teams fielded complete teams for the final. with two of those being moved out of that league.
Which means of the seven schools in the SCL for 2012, only three of those fielded complete teams in their league finals last year, which could make for a very boring upcoming dual season.
It only takes five girls and each of these schools has about 350-900 to try and get out. Toughest will probably be Elsie Allen that has about 600 girls but has never fielded a complete team in the league finals.

The old SCL would have had nine girls returning under 20 minutes for the Spring Lake course. The new realignment leaves them with only five.
The 2011 NBL finals had 7 of their 12 sub 20 minute runners graduate but with the school realignment the 2012 NBL will have 9 sub 20 minute runners returning.
All five of the sub 19 minute runners from both leagues now end up in the NBL.
Maria Carrillo’s Lauren Kraus 2nd in the NBL 18:16 and Andres Natoli 3rd 18:17 are the top two returners from old NBL with teammate Brynna Thigpen 4th 18:50 also under 19.
Casa’s Ashley Moffett would have been the top returning SCL runner at 2nd 18:18 and Windsor’s Victoria Tomaszewski 3rd 18:41 also under 19. Moffett has the chance to be the first person to ever win both the SCL and NBL individual titles having won the SCL in 2010.
In the new SCL the fastest returner now is Jessica Ohanlon of Petaluma 4th 19:03.
UPDATE: Piner’s Paloma Romero, who was only 23rd in NBL finals last year, has opened up the season with a win at the Lagoon Valley Classic in a time just faster than what graduated 1st team All-Empire Kyra Johnson ran last year.

In the new NBL team race it still looks like Carrillo, who returns the two fastest in the league and should take the pennant again as they have since 2003 with five returning at 96:16. Casa should make it harder for them but it will take some to beat the Puma’s.
Casa has all five of their Varsity runners back and their 2012 team time improves 22 seconds faster because of a faster JV runner to 99:24.

This basically means the quality of the NBL should be a lot stronger in 2013 than last year, while the SCL should drop noticeably.
Last year the top 6 from NBL, SCL and two other leagues advanced to NCS Redwood Empire. If it stays at 6 each for 2013 and the team realignments do move two of the strongest from the SCL to the NBL than qualifying will probably be a lot tougher in the NBL than the SCL this spring.
